Employment
For 15 years, Joseph (“Joey”) Johnsen defended doctors (like his father) and hospitals (like those that employed his mother as an RN). But, after making Partner in defense law, he became disillusioned with the disregard of insurance companies for their constituents.
In 2020, Joey changed his practice to prosecuting claims against insurance companies. This is his specialty.
Since 2022, Joey has resolved six cases for $1.2 million or more, representing individual residents of Tennessee against insurance companies. His undefeated trial record as first-chair counsel includes cases in the federal and state courts of Tennessee grounded in the following legal fields: personal injury, premises liability, class action, medical malpractice, first-party insurance, workers’ compensation, and healthcare regulation.
He has worked in small law firms (1-3 attorneys), regional law firms (100 attorneys across the Southeast), and a national firm (thousands of lawyers across the country). Now entering his third decade of practice, Joey is excited to find his home at Minner & Vines.
Education
Joey was born in Lexington, Kentucky. After graduating from high school in North Carolina, he completed his undergraduate studies at Furman University in South Carolina where he was hired to work as an Admissions Counselor.
At Drake University Law School, he published an article in the Law Review, and was selected for a Constitutional Law course taught by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
Personal
Away from work, Joey coaches his 4 children (3 boys, 1 girl) in football, basketball, and baseball leagues around Nashville and middle Tennessee. He and his wife (Erin) enjoy Zanies for standup comedy shows and Ryman Auditorium for concerts.
